Background

From where he came from and who he is a mystery to all in the Kage Kaze Zoku save for the grand master.
He never speaks and is never seen without his mask, it seems to the rest of his fellow shadow crows that he neither has need to eat nor sleep, spending most of his time on the training fields. None would ever consider questioning his place amongst them though. The word of the grand master is unquestioned and beside that fact the man fights like a demon.

Tactics

Ghost is the KKZ Ninja equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife.
There are no scenarios where this hyper mobile model doesn’t excel. There are a lot of cheesy tactics that can be deployed thanks to Vitality, pass tokens and Apparition and he now gets Fear (6), which is phenomenal against lower Ki generating models, especially as he can Intangible his way out of combat or Apparition behind a BtB model and then get the Fear test again alongside a Surprise attack.
Finally Dodge (1) makes him one of the defensive stars in the Warband. Go get him, he’s amazing!

Main points to note for Ghost:

• Ranged attacks and being outnumbered or knocked Prone are his only real downsides and being prone is only an issue if you don’t have Activations to help you go Elsewhere as your second action.
• Ghost is Soulless, meaning immune to Control and not at all threatened by Shugenja or Fear & Dread causing models, making him an almost must have for dealing with the Marionette, Ito Mizuki, Ushi the Sadistic or any form of model control or direct damage via opposed Ki Feats.
• Vitality can only start to be used turn two, but if you can get him to a three point prayer idol, thanks to Shadow Moves, you can pray three times and the double pass tokens (thanks to KKZ themes) means there probably won’t be an opponent nearby that can activate to stop him. If it looks bad at the start of turn three, go Elsewhere and come back turn four for more scoring on the opposite side.
• Apparition and Throw Attack, this is so good, being able to place behind someone that was in BtB and then Surprise and/or Frighten them usually means you are free to put all Melee dice into attack and pull off the re-positioning and Prone special attack without too much fear of failure or repercussion, especially if it means making another nearby model Prone as well.

Best gear to give Ghost:

• Cat like Agility - this removes one of the potential problems presented by being Prone.
• Arashi’s Fan - if this isn’t already on a different higher rice cost model and you know you are up against ranged attacks then taking this for free with the Skirmish Mission theme helps reduce a potential threat.
• Ranged Attack weapons - not technically an attachment but Intangible or Apparition allows easy Surprise hits from ranged weapons for easy success on Blind Bomb or a Hidden Shuriken in the back at close range.
• Disguise - while Soulless no longer impacts on Disguise, Ghosts extra movement abilities mean he is able to get up the battlefield pretty quickly so making him difficult to target and potentially wasting 2 Ki generating enemy model activations.

Where is Ghost most useful? TLDR: Everywhere!

• Zone control defence/offense – because Ghost is technically fast, he can be sent forward either Disguised or using Apparition to gain extra movement turn one, to get him to the 3 point zone asap. Once there he can chuck people out of the zone with a Surprise Throw Attack to help secure the position, or ensure the opponent does not score it. Add Fear (6), **Soulless and Dodge (1) and Ghost is hard to shift for many models once in the zone.
• Prayer missions – this is where Ghost is just horrible to play against, if you can use a speedster (Shizuka with Vial of Raijins Breath) to get to/near the opponents 3 point objective turn one/two after using all your pass tokens, Ghost can (using Shadow Moves) start scoring for you straight away and he will be difficult to dislodge with the ability to Apparition to a free part of the idol to carry on praying free of enemy ZoCs. If things start to look bad, he can simply go Elsewhere and come back on to pray on the other 3 point idol in the following turn with a Walk and an Apparition, avoiding becoming de-buffed by Running that turn.
• Kill VIM missions – Ghost finds it easy to get behind enemy main lines thanks to apparition, so any likely looking VIM type models are not safe at all, especially when they are being thrown closer to Rin or Katsumi, or being left Prone in the open for Ujimushi or Dudiko to finish off.
• Being a VIM – It will stop Ghost going Elsewhere by being a VIM but he still has Intangible/Apparition and Dodge so is tough to pin down enough to kill when making a run for it for a target zone, especially with Fear (6), potentially 3 Activations and the Smoke Bomb Event Card.
• Turning Scenario objectives – as mentioned before the ability to Apparition to a free spot on an idol forces opponents to double team Ghost to stop him praying multiple times, he can Elsewhere to come back on the other side of a play zone, meaning he is never more than one move away from being able to interact with an idol, and Vitality means he can do enough actions to turn an objective completely from enemy to friendly even after making a Move action. If instead you need him to run interference, he can throw models into each other to make them both Prone and waste their activations. Just a perfect all-rounder so he is amazing for tournament play!
